Called to Protect

The Safe Environment Program's mission is to assist the Archbishop in coordinating child abuse prevention efforts throughout the archdiocese. To support parishes, schools and agencies of the Archdiocese of Seattle with all Safe Environment efforts, including background checks, Safe Environment training and development and implementation of related policies. This program is required for clergy, employees and volunteers with ongoing unsupervised contact with minors and vulnerable adults, and all volunteers.

There are four steps to be taken for being in compliance with the Safe Environment policies:
1.  Complete a background check.
2.  Read, sign and return to Parish Office the agreement to follow the policies and procedures set forth in the following documents:  “Policy for the Prevention of & Response to Sexual Abuse, Sexual Misconduct & Sexual Harassment,” “Code of Professional Conduct for Church Personnel,” and “Reporting Suspected Abuse or Neglect of Minors and Vulnerable Adults.”
3.   Attend a Called to Protect for Ministries class. This three-hour training is designed to teach participants how to recognize the signs of abuse, how to respond to suspected abuse and how to keep our ministries, programs and schools safe. See class information below.
4.  Renew your training online every year.
