Sacraments
Each of our celebrations of the seven great sacraments of the Church give us "a glimpse into the heart of God." For a sacrament itself is a sign that gives us an understanding of a deeper reality and meaning. Jesus himself is "sacrament" - a visible sign of the invisible God. "In the wonder of the incarnation, we see our God made visible and so we are caught up in the love of the God we cannot see" as we pray in the Preface of the Mass on Christmas. Jesus remains among us today in the Sacrament of the Eucharist, the first and greatest sacrament, the "Sacrament of sacraments" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #1211)
Jesus is present and made known in each of the Sacraments: The Sacraments of Baptism; Eucharist; and Confirmation make up the Sacraments of Initiation; the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick which are the Sacraments of Healing; and the Sacraments of Marriage and Holy Orders which are the Sacraments of Vocation.
In our sacramental rituals we celebrate with the faith community the reality of an "already lived experience" in the lives of the faithful. Sacraments are celebrated in Church because we have already experienced the power and the mystery of God in our lives. We celebrate and rejoice with the faith community and mark the reality of that experience with sacramental rituals of grace and beauty.
Baptism:
The Sacrament of Baptism for infants and children is usually celebrated at a Sunday liturgy on the second Sunday of each month, excluding the Lenten season. Attendance at a preparation class is required. Please check out Baptism Preparation for more details.
If you are an adult and are interested in Baptism, the preparation for adults is a year long process called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, or RCIA for short. Please see RCIA for more details about the process and how to register.
Confirmation:
Confirmation classes form every other year. The next class is currently forming and will celebrate the sacrament in May of 2009. This is open to Juniors and Seniors in High School. If you would like to register, or have questions, please contact pegb@olgseattle.com.
More information about the process of preparation and details on requirements please go to Confirmation Preparation, or: click here.
